Nathaniel’s practice involves advising on matters primarily in the area of reinsurance, with a focus on property, energy, construction, and engineering and infrastructure risks. He handles a wide range of commercial work in multiple jurisdictions, including advising on large claims and representing institutional clients in complex insurance disputes. His practice extends to advising on financing arrangements as well as international sanction regimes.

Nathaniel is involved in international arbitration (institutional / ad hoc) and manages litigation proceedings in various jurisdictions. He has successfully represented clients in several high-profile cases, including a major insurer before the Singapore International Commercial Court and a global commodities trader in a cross-border arbitration.

Nathaniel is a co-author of the Singapore chapter of the Product Liability Comparative Guide 2023, published by The Legal 500.

  • Acting for a large commercial reinsurer and its Lloyd’s syndicate, advising on coverage issues and litigation in the English Commercial Court in relation to various airline operator claims arising from international sanctions imposed in response to the Russia-Ukraine war. Listed among The Lawyer’s top 20 cases of 2024.
  • Acting for a leading commercial reinsurer (Singapore-seated ARIAS arbitration) concerning a claim under a Public Offering of Securities Insurance policy as a result of class action proceedings in the US District Court of California against a NYSE-listed global rice distributor.
  • Acting for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s largest private sector power entity and reinsurers (London-seated ICC arbitration) in a subrogated recovery action against the suppliers of various defective equipment in power plants located in Turkey.
  • Acting for Indonesia’s largest independent power producer and reinsurers (Singapore-seated SIAC arbitration) in a subrogated recovery action due to an explosion and fire to a power plant. Managing litigation for an associated claim under a supply contract in the District Court of Nagoya, Japan.
  • Advising reinsurers in relation to claims under an EAR policy for damage to a power plant and resulting DSU/ALOP losses following Typhoon Mawar in Guam, USA.
  • Advising reinsurers in relation to a claim under a CAR policy for flood damage to construction works to Malaysia’s largest highway project located in Sabah, East Malaysia.
