Emily specialises in advising insurer and insured clients on professional indemnity insurance as well as disciplinary proceedings.  She has acted for wide range of professionals including valuers, solicitors, real estate agents, insurance brokers, engineers and architects in professional negligence proceedings.

She has specific expertise in claims against solicitors arising from conveyancing transactions, commercial contracts, estates, wills and solicitor undertakings.  She also regularly represents other lawyers in defence of New Zealand Law Society complaints.

Emily also has extensive experience in general liability and construction insurance and regularly provides advice to insurers on matters of policy interpretation involving complex property damage issues.

  • Regularly acting on numerous professional New Zealand Law Society complaints before the Standards Committee as well as representing practitioners at review applications and hearings with the Legal Complaints Review Office.
  • Appearing as junior counsel in the High Court in relation to solicitor negligence and breach of contract claims.
  • Successfully resolving numerous civil claims relating to professional indemnity matters at private mediation.
  • Acting for a firm of valuers pursuant to a professional indemnity insurance policy for a complex multi-million-dollar claim involving multiple parties and multiple valuations.
  • Acting for various professional organisations and individuals, including a number of insurance brokers, on complex insurance claims arising out of the Canterbury earthquakes.
  • Regularly providing policy coverage advice to insurers in relation to professional indemnity and general liability insurance policies involving complex issues.
