Demi has extensive experience across a broad range of general liability matters, including public liability, catastrophic injuries, fatal accident claims, workers compensation recovery claims and compulsory third party (CTP) matters. She also has a strong practice in professional conduct investigations, Integrity Commission investigations, coronial inquests, and Government inquiries, and has experience advising on employment law and discrimination claims backed by a Graduate Certificate in Employment Relations. Demi also has experience with professional indemnity matters, including acting for medical and allied health practitioners in regulatory matters, medical negligence claims, and coronial inquests. Demi has acted for a range of insurers and insureds, ranging from government and statutory entities, to schools, councils, private national, global and local companies.
Although forming part of the Melbourne team, Demi will remain in Hobart, where she has practiced since her admission in 2018. Demi’s understanding of the legal landscape in Tasmania and its intricacies, affords her a unique advantage when managing and resolving claims.
Demi is not only a practical and detail driven lawyer, but she is also approachable and empathetic. She is known for her ability to build trust and rapport quickly, fostering strong relationships with clients and colleagues alike. In 2024 Demi was named the 2024 ANZIIF Young Insurance Professional of the Year and she currently serves as the Head of Events & Communications on the Executive Committee of YIPS. Demi is a Board Director for the Centre for Legal Studies and a sitting member of the Police Review Board.
- Acting in a wide range of personal injury claims, including catastrophic and traumatic brain injuries, nervous shock and fatal accident claims.
- Acted on behalf of an insured in relation to a complex multi-party injury claim involving a dual common law claim and workers compensation recovery claim. This case was multi-faceted and involved complex liability and contribution issues, concerns around the Harman principle, and extensive discovery between the parties.
- Acted on behalf of a mining company in respect of a fatal accidents claim brough by the widow of a labour hire worker who had died on the site owned and operated by the insured. This matter involved complex liability issues, had been the subject of a prior coronial inquest and substantive evidence gathering.
- Acted on behalf of an insured in respect of a claim brought by a CTP insurer seeking recovery of damages and benefits paid to an injured person. The matter focused on statutory interpretation and whether by virtue of the legislation the insured was required to indemnify the CTP insurer.
- Acted as instructing solicitor in the ‘Weiss Independent Review’.
- Acted on behalf of a state-owned corporation in relation to a coronial inquest into the deaths of two individuals who fell into the Hobart waterfront and drowned on two separate occasions.
- Acted on behalf of the trainee pilot in relation to a coronial inquest into the death of an instructor pilot who died following the crash of a helicopter (being flown by the trainee p-pilot) during a training exercise.
- Advised and instructed a government department in respect of an Integrity Commission Hearing and acted on behalf of individuals in response to Integrity Commission investigations.
