Salma specialises in property damage, product liability claims, recoveries and policy coverage. Salma has particular experience in the construction and infrastructure industry in which she assists clients with contractual and indemnity matters, as well as advising on liability and quantum issues in both recovery and defence claims.

Salma has extensive experience acting on behalf of and advising insurers, brokers, insureds, self-insureds and corporate insureds. Salma has a particular focus on delivering commercial outcomes for clients and achieving early resolutions in both litigated and unlitigated matters.

Salma has worked extensively for insurers and insureds in various complex commercial property claims and coverage disputes, as well as assisting corporate clients with due diligence and AML/CTF compliance. Salma also has a background in working for various government agencies, including APRA during the Financial Services Royal Commission and the OAIC.

Coverage

  • Assisting a pharmaceutical client in overturning a denial of indemnity in a coverage dispute with its insurer relating to the interpretation of a policy exclusion.
  • Advising an underwriting client on policy coverage relating to a complex business interruption claim involving significant underinsurance and interpretation of policy wording relating to declared income by the insured.

Property Damage

  • Representing a client in a complex subrogated recovery with a quantum of $1 million arising from a construction project which involved multiple liable parties, including in seeking leave from the Supreme Court of Victoria to pursue a defendant in liquidation.
  • Defending a client in a multi-party property damage claim arising in nuisance and negligence relating to a restaurant fire, achieving an early commercial outcome on behalf of the client at mediation.

Corporate and Commercial

  • Advising a payment services provider on its AML/CTF obligations to conduct KYC checks on customers in arrangements involving third party proxies.
  • Prepared a complex SaaS contract on behalf of a client for provision of payment software program services to an Australian bank, including conducting contract negotiations on behalf of the client.
