Sara specialises in general and liability insurance and has extensive experience in advising insurers and their insureds on complex legal arguments. She also advises on material damage, business interruption and professional indemnity matters, and acts in subrogated recoveries.
Over her career, Sara has developed a deep understanding of the legal issues and practical implications of property damage and construction claims. In these matters, she regularly works closely with engineers, quantity surveyors, contractors and other construction industry representatives.
Sara also assists with advising insured professionals on a wide range of professional negligence claims, including matters involving lawyers, architects, builders and engineers.
Sara’s career in insurance law started after the Canterbury earthquakes, when she acted in countless residential insurance claims and successfully negotiated outcomes in both mediations and judicial settlement conferences. Some years after the Canterbury earthquakes, Sara’s work returned to Canterbury, where she assisted in the Port Hills fires litigation on behalf of 73 claimants who suffered property damage in excess of $14 million.
- Acting for an insurer in a subrogated recovery on behalf of 73 plaintiffs who suffered losses following the 2017 Christchurch Port Hills Fires. The High Court proceeding involved technical expert evidence and novel legal issues, particularly around the law of nuisance, damages and betterment.
- Acting for an insurer in a subrogated recovery claim arising from a fire in a road freight transport B-train.
- Assisting an insurer in defending proceedings in which customers sought court approval to proceed as a representative class action.
- Advising on complex material damage and business interruption indemnity issues for insurers.
- Pursuing subrogated recovery claims for insurers and insureds, including claims following fire damage, storm damage, and flooding damage caused to commercial buildings.
