Rhyse is an experienced litigator with a focus on complex and sensitive disputes and investigations. He regularly assists large non-government organisations to respond to institutional liability claims, and also advises directors and individuals in relation to economic torts, shareholder actions, and complex contractual disputes. Rhyse also assists various organisations to respond to freedom of information requests.

Additionally, Rhyse has broad experience in public inquiries and Royal Commissions, having acted for and advised a large not-for-profit during the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety and Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability. He was also a member of the solicitors assisting the Board of Inquiry into the McCrae landslide.

Rhyse’s approach to working with his clients is informed by his prior experience, having worked in-house at two large non-government organisations and as an associate at the then AAT. This experience enables him to work closely with clients to understand their thinking, identify key issues, and effectively assist them to strategically manage risks and obtain positive, pragmatic outcomes.

  • Acting as a Solicitor Assisting the Board of Inquiry into the McCrae landslide. Key responsibilities include:
    • interviewing witnesses and preparing statements;
    • instructing Counsel Assisting at hearings;
    • briefing and liaising with experts;
    • document review and retention; and
    • drafting and reviewing the final report.
  • Acting for and advising large institutional organisations, community services organisations, non-government schools, and insurers in institutional liability, personal injury, and various other civil disputes, claims and actions.
  • Representing shareholders in oppression proceedings in the Supreme Court of Victoria.
  • Representing an individual in a complex contractual dispute involving the interpretation of earn out provisions.
  • Advising a non-government organisation on the commutation of its insurance policy worth over $150 million.
  • Advising individuals on the prospects and viability of defamation proceedings.
