Known for his deep sector knowledge, Ian has particular expertise in energy-related matters, having advised on disputes involving gas and steam turbines, generators, wind turbines, biogas systems and related liability issues.

- Leading successful litigation relating to coverage of wind turbine collapse in Thailand. Issues included gross negligence, industry standard practice and reasonable precautions.
- Representing insurers in US$125million claim for earthquake damage and lightning outage on power plant in Laos. Analysis of policy interpretation and negotiation successfully reduced claim to US25million.
- Advising Biogas company on fire and resultant issues relating to PPA outages and contractual issues.
- Advising reinsurers on fleet issues in Thailand relating to wind turbine blade defects.
- Represented insurers on coverage and subrogation in double occurrence of blade liberation in gas turbine leading to business interruption losses in excess of US$45million. Managed negotiation for US$20million recovery.
- Defending developers in TAI arbitration claim for THB700million concerning mixed use development. Issues include liquidated damages, breach of contract and defective works.
- Pursued subrogation against turbine manufacturer for supply of defective goods in Thailand relating to defective turbine unit, successfully negotiating THB37million settlement for insurers.
- Representing insurers on CAR claim in Indonesia for US$30million.
- Singapore, Chemical Plant: advising on explosion on chemical farm, including issues of property damage and death of workers – involving worker’s compensation and potential third-party liability claims.
- Malaysia, Construction Division Losses: advising on claim relating to allegations of corruption, breach of fiduciary duties and negligence against a division of an MNC that recorded losses in excess of RM2 billion.
