In our latest Q&A with our recently appointed partners, we get to know Brisbane-based general liability specialist, Cassandra Wills.

Tell us about your journey to becoming a partner at W+K.

I’ve been in the Brisbane insurance market for 20 years and joined W+K five years ago. During those five years, I’ve seen the Brisbane office undergo huge growth. That growth, and the direct support I’ve received from a number of clients, saw discussions start as to my joining the W+K partnership. Now here we are!

What made you decide to become a lawyer?

I’m not from a legal background but had wanted to study law at university since I was in high school. I really enjoyed the course while at uni – so much so, that I’ve never really thought about other career options.

What do you think is a major issue facing your area of insurance law?

On a day-to-day basis in the personal injury space, a major issue is the ever-increasing figures put forward by claimants’ solicitors as to their recoverable costs. It is exorbitant. It really impacts the ability of matters to settle in a quick and timely manner and directly impacts defence costs. I’m not sure I have the answer to solve the problem, but I’m working on it.

What’s the best piece of advice (work or personal) you’ve been given?

Putting aside all the golden rules and moral principles about how to treat others and being a kind, empathetic person, in a work context, my motto most days is “let’s get stuff done”. Whether it’s at work or at home, productivity and outcomes are not only great KPIs, but also strong internal motivation. A good work ethic is worth its weight in gold.

What do you enjoy most about working at W+K?

The quality of work is outstanding and the firm’s support systems make coming to work every day very easy.

What do you get up to outside of law?

A large portion of my non-work time is made up of being a mum taxi and making sure all those I care about have everything they need to live their best lives. Otherwise, I’m still searching for that one hobby or passion to fuel me outside of work. I am looking forward to returning to overseas travel in 2022 (touch wood).

Complete this sentence: If I wasn’t a lawyer, I would be…

Probably a manager of some type. Project manager? People manager? Hopefully a happy one!
